Beyond the First Click: Why INP is the "responsiveness" Metric That Matters in 2026

The "Frozen Screen" Penalty

We’ve all been there. You load a website, it looks ready, you tap a button... and nothing happens. You tap again. Rage clicks ensue. Suddenly, the site catches up and executes all three clicks at once.

In the past, Google’s Core Web Vitals might have given that site a passing grade because the First Input Delay (FID) was fine. As of 2026, that grace period is over. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) is the new standard, and it is holding websites accountable for every single interaction.

FID vs. INP: What Changed?

  • FID (The Old Way): Measured the delay only on the very first interaction. It was like judging a marathon runner solely by how fast they tied their shoes.
  • INP (The 2026 Standard): Observes the latency of all interactions (clicks, taps, keyboard presses) throughout the user's entire session. It reports the worst (or near-worst) delay.
